Have read this book for over 30 + years. Had a paperback that was falling apart. This book is in great shape. The book jacket was just slightly worn, but it was the book I was interested in. Set in 1960s or 70s, with a gothic thriller, romance theme, but semi-modern day, you'll love this book. Can't find many books by Beatrice Brandon, but there is at least one, The Court of Silver Shadows. I'm looking forward to a comfy chair and good books.

The cliffs of night Beatrice Brandon 9780385096287 Books Reviews

I have loved and reread this book for many years. My copy is tattered and frayed but beloved and treasured. I always wanted this book to be made into a movie but it missed the limelight. I still have hope.
I read this book for the first time when my son was 2; he is now 32. I couldn't find this book for sale anywhere so I debated just 'not returning' or 'losing it' from the local library. After a 7 month deliberation I did return it and just kept borrowing it constantly (from other libraries LOL). I bought it used at an exorbitant price a couple of years ago! The Cliffs of Night is the most enjoyable peek into Ireland, her legends, and the characters are larger than life. How Ms. Brandon did it I wish I knew. I just know that it rained today, it's AZ, and I pulled out The Cliffs of Night and read it. I just 'get it' more every time I read it - and I love to read two or three books a day whenever I am ill. You know, I don't even mind anymore so much when I'm down with lupus if I can grab a book like The Cliffs of Night - and yes, I do love Mary Stewart.
I can't remember how long I've had a paperback copy of this book, which I imagine I picked up secondhand somewhere. It's battered and yellowed, the pages dog-eared and the cover stained. It's stayed with me through a divorce and remarriage, and since the remarriage celebrates it's 25th anniversary in less than a month, I know I've had it a very long time. My bookshelves have changed from romantic suspense and mysteries to mostly educational fare, including nature and field guides of just about everything, and fiction has been relegated to pretty much kindle only, except for this book. It will always have an honored spot. I'll never willingly part with it. I just put it down again after the umpteenth reading, after a friend vacationing in Ireland posted photos of the Cliffs of Moher. Hopefully I'll be able to see them myself someday, they now hold just as much fascination for me as they did for the fictional Grania Kirk, just because of her story.
perfect romantic suspense novel
It is well worth reading, it's one of the best. It is romantic and Irish and a great adventure. You will fall in love with Ireland and it's history. I don't want to spoil any of the plot. If you like Mary Stewart you will love this book.
This novel follows Grania, the protagonist, as she travels from the United States to her ancestral home in Ireland on holiday. Along the way she becomes embroiled in a search for some archaeological relics and falls in love with an Irishman.

I thought I would like this book. I wanted to like this book. The Cliffs of Moher (an important setting in this novel) are one of my favourite places in Ireland and archaeology is part of the plot. It sounded perfect for me. But, alas, it was not to be. I could not get into this book no matter how hard I tried, mainly because of Grania. I didn’t like her. She seemed far too neurotic. During the beginning of the novel she complains of her “crackling nerves” or “snapping nerves” or her “illness” related to nerves. That alone was annoying, but once I found out the cause of her “illness”, I was even more annoyed. Grania was in this terrible emotional state because she had been working hard and broke up with her boyfriend. If that’s what it takes to become ill, it’s a wonder I survived graduate school! She seemed overly neurotic about something that is a normal part of life for a twenty-something woman. A novel, for me, is spoiled if I don’t like the protagonist. I do give this novel two stars instead of one because with a better character than Grania, I probably would have enjoyed (or at least liked) it.
I cannot tell you how excited I was to find one of my favorite mysteries. When I originally bought a copy of the book, I read it again and again until the cover fell off. I am one who doesn't tire of a good story with a great plot. I find there is always something new discovered in each reading or an image that is just so delightful that it can be savored numerous times. Now, so many years later, I find the story as intriquing as I did originally. I love mysteries and folk lore - this book is a great combination of both. I'm so glad to find it again. The ending - ahh it is grand!
