New Year's Eve, 1995. Rising young architect Jimmy Gambar is on top of the world, ready to pop the question to the girl of his dreams at a fancy restaurant. Ten minutes later he snaps and storms out, leaving behind the girlfriend, her ridiculous gift of a hot pink necktie and the precise way of life he's known for so long.
Later that night, big trouble - a sleazy downtown bar, a shady lady with a switchblade in his SoHo loft, an accidental fall against a metal lamp. Now Jimmy has a dead woman's body lying on his rug, and only one person to turn to - a man he hasn't seen in twenty years.
His big brother Gus ("The Ghost") Gambuzza.

"What started out as a wild ride to get rid of a corpse ends up as a touching and believable story of family love and survival, a testament to Carillo's storytelling abilities."
- Publishers Weekly

"What a lovely book this is...a long night filled with happenings that should seem improbable but don't because Carillo's reality is so inviting...a tender tale, albeit knowing and funny too."
- New York Daily News

"Reminisent of the movie 'After Hours,' this nightmarish picaresque novel mixes elements of slapstick, the surreal, and the absurd, all delivered in rambunctious, wildly profane Brooklynese."
- Booklist

"Oddly heartwarming"
-London Gentleman's Quarterly

"A classic New York gangster story, replete with world-weary hoods, fruity dialogue and witty one-liners...the observations of Brooklyn life and the redemption of Jimmy's soul are warm and almost profound."
-London Daily Telegraph

"An inspired marriage of the pciaresque narrative and the road movie in which Gus, worldly wise and world weary, and Jimmy, his paranoid straight man, move through a series of hilarious near-disasters."
- Newport News Daily Press

"Carillo sustains his deliberately improbably narrative with elan, piling up the jokes in the best comic-thriller tradition."
-The Times of London

" 'My Ride With Gus' is a funny, touching, ultimately exhilarating trip with people who will stay with you long after the trip ends. It's a novel about the mob, about love, about family, one that could only come together in the hands of someone who knows how to tell a story, and knows New York City just as well."
- Mike Lupica

"...continuing suspense and snappy, wisecracking dialogue."
-The London Independent

"My Ride With Gus is at times hilarious, and at others it is a moving account of just what family and life and society is all about."
- The Pilot, Southern Pines, N.C.

" 'My Ride With Gus' is outrageously funny, with Brooklynese molding the scnee...zany characters, bizarre predicaments, hilarious subplots and downright scary situations."
-The Post and Courier

My Ride With Gus edition by Charlie Carillo Tony Carillo Literature Fiction eBooks

This is the second time that I've read Charlie Carillo's My Ride With Gus. The first time was in the late 1990s when a friend asked me if I wasn't originally from Brooklyn, and when I replied that I was, he handed me this same book in paperback and said, "Then you'll appreciate this."

I remember this as I stayed up most of the night reading it, and was glad to find it here as a Kindle edition, where I could enjoy it a second time.

Right there in the first chapter we meet our hero Jimmy Gambar, a New York success story, a man of 38 who's about to be made partner in an important architectural firm. He's sitting there at a table, waiting, thinking about all the things that he liked about his adventurous girlfriend of two years, of how she had had gotten him involved in things that he would have never consider doing on his own. He contemplates their adventures together camping, white-water rafting, motorcycle riding, skydiving and such. Picture this:

"Yes, Jimmy told himself; yes. He was seated alone at a table in the Windows on the World restaurant on New Year's Eve, awaiting the arrival of his girlfriend, Wendy Orgel. Far below, the lights of the Brooklyn Bridge twinkled like the strands of a magical necklace. It was a crystal-clear night, the perfect occasion to ask the woman you loved for her hand in marriage."

The Windows on the World was the restaurant at the top of the ill-fated World Trade Center, but this was before the 9/11 attacks, and it was the perfect setting for such a romantic New Year's Eve date. Yet the romance went completely wrong, and he didn't have the chance to give her the diamond ring that he had in his pocket. After uttering a profane comment to Wendy, he stormed out of the restaurant and took the elevator to ground level and caught a cab waiting outside of the Twin Towers.

He made his next mistake by telling the old-fashioned cab driver what he had said to his girlfriend. The cab driver told him to get out, and feeling lost and confused, Jimmy began walking home to his SoHo apartment. Stopping in a bar on the way, he proceeded to get plastered, then started dancing with a "saucer-eyed Puerto Rican woman in a short leather skirt." Getting dizzy he left, only to be followed by the woman, and they ended up at his place.

Things got a little crazy when the woman wanted to do some drugs, and Jimmy asked her to leave. She slapped him, then pulled a knife, and in the struggle that ensued, she stumbled into a lamp, killing her. Jimmy was stunned seeing the body on his floor, then called his older brother Gus, asking him to come over.

And this was all in the first chapter.

Gus was a classic wiseguy, and the pair of them put the woman's body, wrapped in a rug, into the trunk of his Oldsmobile and the pair headed out to Brooklyn to find a place to dump the body. And of course we meet more hoodlums, funny characters and assorted local eccentrics than you can imagine... unless you happen to be from Brooklyn and you're even remotely related to big brother Gus "The Ghost" Gambuzza... and this is just the beginning. And if you want to know who the dead girl really was, and whatever happened to Wendy, you'll just have to read it. For this reader, it was even better the second time.

Through dialogues, recollections and Jimmy's subtly portrayed point of view, the members of the Gambuzza 'famiglia' come alive in Charlie Carillo's My Ride With Gus, and this one is a true testament to the author's storytelling abilities. It's a wild ride, occasionally stereotypical, but all in all, a good one.

My Ride With Gus edition by Charlie Carillo Tony Carillo Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Any book by Mr. Carillo is great by me. He brings me back to my childhood in New York City because he is NYC personified. He doesn't pull any punches. He is real, honest, kind and maddening at the same time. I believe anyone who reads this, or any other of his books will find these qualities and more while reading. By the way, you don't have to be a native New Yorker to feel this, just a human being with a conscience and a love of humanity.
In the novel, My Ride With Gus, by Charlie Carillo, the center theme of this novel is the love of family. Jimmy Gambar, the main character is in a dilemma and the only person he can think of to help him is his brother Gus, whom he hasn't been in contact with for many years. The story captures the bond between brothers, the trust of family, and the undeniable fact that no matter what happens in your life, your family will always be there for you. Thank you, Charlie Carillo for making me one of your biggest fans. Your knack for storytelling is amazing and this is one of those stories that will not only make you laugh, but will also make you want to read more stories by this author!! So when are they going to make a movie based on this story?
Like many of Carillo's books, 'My Ride with Gus,' is a quick page turner that not only makes you laugh but keeps you on the edge of your seat. This story is funny as it is endearing and played like a movie in my head thanks to his vivid writing and masterful storytelling. By the end of the book, you feel like you have known these guys your whole life and want to be around them all the time just to see what they will do next. While this story was written in the early 90s, it still translates today and as Brooklyn becomes more of the epicenter of New York cool, here is a book that makes the rapidly gentrifying borough a main character.
I really enjoyed this story, and the humor was very refreshing. I even found myself laughing out loud. The author does need to research skydiving, however. In one part of the book, Jimmy "had stood at the open doorway of a plane two thousand feed over a "target area"....I've done skydiving, and when one exits the plane the altitude is more like 10,000 feet. Also, the authors indicate this was Jimmy's first jump, and no way would he have been allowed to jump alone for the first time. The first jump is tandem, when the novice is actually attached to a jump master. Then, to continue toward a certificate, a lot of training is involved.

There were no grammar errors! Wow, how unusual. However, there were a few punctuation errors, and lots of hyphens where they didn't belong, probably due to converting to the e-format "he won-dered," "sec-ond-rate," "au-tomobile," "no mat-ter," and many more like these examples.

All in all, the book was an interesting romp!
Loved this book! I was hooked right away with the writing style, wit, and main character. This is a great story about a man who is lost in life because he has spent too much time running away from problems rather than deal with them. When the main character gets into a bit of trouble, he digs deep and calls someone from his past to help out. That's when the story really gets going. It's a great ride! This would be a fantastic movie. I could totally see the action in my head, I was wondering if this was first a screenplay that was turned into a book.

Two things that bothered me the title is in first person, but the story is in third person. That threw me off at first. Second was the bad editing - lots of punctuation issues. Neither detracted from my enjoyment of the book, which is unusual. It speaks to how much fun this book is!

If you are on the fence, just jump and read this book. Go for it!
