Callum (The Cursed Clan ) is book number one in a 'new' series by Melissa Schroeder. I use the word 'new' loosely because the book has been around for a long time and for a long time there was no new book continuing the series forthcoming. Now there will be and I for one am excited to see this series continued. I had this book once, lost it, and it has taken the re-release to get me to read it. Not sure what happened first time around as that was a long time ago. This time around though, I enjoyed the story.
This story focuses mainly on Callum Lennon, head of the clan/family and Phoebe the archaeologist/expert who comes in to read and help decipher a diary that it is hoped will end the curse on the five Lennons. From the beginning the curse wasn't really made clear and I was waiting for it to become clearer, but it didn't. I wanted to know why and am hoping that more information about the how and why will be forthcoming in future books. It didn't help that the obvious and sometimes almost deadly friction between the Lennons and the McWaltons was also very unclear. Also, how the Laird can/did make trouble for a seemingly rich and powerful family and family-run company like the Lennons have, was also a bit strange. Most Lairds these days have no power, they have estates that are crumbling and very little influence. This enmity needed to be further and more clearly explained for the reader. There were hints here and there but not much else.
It turns out that in Phoebe's eyes,all of the Lennons she has contact with are handsome/beautiful which was a bit much. Plain and having character/brains works just as well for me. Not everyone needs to look like a blonde haired, blue-eyed god/highlander. I enjoyed the way Phoebe stood up to Callum who was standoffish and taciturn at the best of times when dealing with her, but I would have thought that as a renowned expert in her field she wouldn't have had to deal with the likes Laird McWalton to try to get a grant.
She also has personal issues that have caused pain and her parents and dead husband are two of them. She does have backbone but it seems to have taken her ages to acquire this backbone and use it. Phoebe also has loyal friends, namely her former assistant and her new husband, who call the situations as they see them which is refreshing and look out for her and they add more depth to the story and it is through their interactions that we see another side of Phoebe.
Callum is attracted to Phoebe but doesn't trust her and makes her work in his office where this precious diary is also kept. Now, one thing just popped into my mind, if the whole clan is so old, then shouldn't they have been able to read parts of the diary themselves - after all, they should have been familiar with the language(s) from the past, considering they were living in that time period - even though parts were in code??? What will happen when her involvement with the Laird becomes known to Callum and the rest of the clan?
I also had a few other little niggles like some typos - 'to' instead of 'too' and some odd language use - I have never heard a British person say that they will chat someone up later to mean they will come and speak to them later. To me if I heard someone use chat you up, it would mean something completely different to what was meant in the story. These things are minor though and can be rectified easily.
Apart from the few things that caused me to pop out of my reading and the things that I questioned because in reality they just wouldn't have happened - like the guards just letting Callum go after he shot the Laird, and no police involvement...I did enjoy the story.
I liked seeing Callum's barriers break down and the relationship between himself and Phoebe developing. The literal thawing and growth of Phoebe in the bedroom was also well done. Sexually Phoebe hadn't really had much experience other than an ass of a dead husband and with Callum she found herself on the receiving end of some very hot attention beneath the sheets. I also liked the thawing of the relationship between Phoebe and the servant.
There is obviously a whole lot more to the story of the cursed clan and I will be getting the next installment because I really want to find out exactly what this curse is and how it will affect each of the remaining members of the clan and then what will happen when they are all free of the curse for good.
I would say take a chance on this book because I think this series will be one worth reading if Ms. Schroeder's other series are anything to go by.

There is more to this Scottish family than meets the eye. Callum has taken on the responsibility for his family, and that has taken one hell of a toll on him. With all of the weight on his shoulders, he has become a brute of a man. Building and building on his walls to make it almost impossible for anyone to penetrate them. Enter Phoebe Chilton, an archeologist with one hell of an IQ, and one hell of a chip on her shoulder. Ever since she could remember, she has been following her family’s footsteps, only doing what is expected of her, what her parents tell her she should do. All she wants out of life, is to do something that is ONLY for her, something that she has always wanted to do. The Lennon family might be the ones to give her that chance. It’s hard to do your job when you want to strangle AND screw the man in charge.
Callum has a little bit of a trust issue, rightly so, considering his past and his enemies. When he sets his eyes on Phoebe, he immediately lusts after her, but he knows he can’t act on this, because he has to do what’s right for his family. The pull between these two are so intense, will he be able to stay away and keep it professional? Or will he give in to his sexual urges, and take what’s his, consequences be damned?

Callum was such a great, exciting, sexy read. It flowed easily and quickly, and I finished it in one night. This was chalk full of mystery and suspense with a little dose of beautiful erotic mixed in, in all the right places. I loved all of the characters. Not only Callum and Phoebe, but the rest of the family as well. We get little sneak peeks at how each of Callum’s family members operate, and it definitely got me excited for each one to have their own story. Not only do you read of a beautiful love unfolding, but there is a puzzle that you try to follow along with characters, which makes it not only sexy, but exciting as well. By the time Callum has ended, you have some answers, but not all, and Melissa Schroeder did a fantastic job of sucking you in to the story and having you feel something for this family and their laird. I’m intrigued and you will be to. If you LOVE paranormal romance with a bit of mystery, than this book is for you! You better hurry, because Callum’s cousin ANGUS is up next, and I can’t wait to see what is up his sleeve.
