Disclosure: I received a review copy from the author in exchange for a honest review.Portrait of Rage was a big, big surprise. I knew it was going to be good but it went beyond my expectations. I was captivated within the first few pages and it had me hooked till the very end. The story is centered on an artist and a murder investigation. Thomas Sharp, our main character, recently purchased a perfect house to showcase his art, but what he didn’t except was it to be haunted...by little girls all under the age of sixteen. The girls’ terrorizes his dreams and his waking hours, urging him to find their murderer and it is through his art that readers follow along Thomas as he discovers what happened to the nine little girls and the identity of the killer.
Wise’s Portrait of Rage is impressive. The writing was natural and the story flowed seamlessly. The plot /structure was perfect and the pacing great. I can tell the author took time and consideration in everything she did, from how the story was setup to the words written on the pages. Everything from the setting, characters, and paranormal elements served its purpose and made the book come alive. For example, Thomas used painting as a medium to interpret the girls' messages. I thought this was clever and visually detailed that I can picture it perfectly in my mind. Another reason why I thought it was notable is because this is the author’s debut novel. If I didn’t know that already, one would have thought a seasoned author with multiple books under her belt wrote it.
Portrait of Rage is told through multiple POVs which gave readers an in-depth look at the characters and a wider perspective on the situation. I love seeing the story from Thomas, the detectives, and the killer’s point-of-view. Wise is a natural storyteller and she did a great job creating the perfect combination of mystery, thriller, suspense, and romance with a touch of supernatural. While the story is filled with tormented specters, there was an interesting turn of events with some of the characters possessing unique abilities. Portrait of Rage kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. The story had so many twist and turns that when the big reveal came…I was speechless! I thought I had the killer pegged but I was so shocked when I found out who it was. Definitely didn’t see that one coming! I loved Portrait of Rage and I think it’s an excellent start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what the author has planned for The Marcel Experience. I highly recommend Portrait of Rage. I think it will appeal to a lot of people, as there is something for everyone. Read it, you won’t be disappointed!

Portrait of Rage The Marcel Experience Book 1 eBook Cynthia H Wise Reviews
This is my first experience with this author but it won’t be my last. The dark mood she creates throughout Portrait Of Rage kept me reading until the last page. This is not a book where pages can be skipped. Each chapter perfectly pushes the story forward an inch or mile depending on where you are in the text. I wouldn’t call it a fast-paced read but there was no moment where it was slow either. In my opinion, Cynthia Wise is a master of the slow, chilling story-build but she’s not afraid to yank the curtain back early on so the reader knows what’s at stake.
Portrait Of Rage showcases the threat of supernatural horror layered on real-life horrors. This aspect of the book is finely balanced with just enough supernatural occurrences to keep the eerie suspense of the story going. As a lead character, Thomas Shear is completely believable as the artist whose work is inspired by his nightmares. There’s a bit of steamy romance and even a likeable, competent detective looking for the truth. This was a unique and original read with just a reminiscent hint of the classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
I would highly recommend this to readers of dark thrillers.
Glad I took a chance on this author. As a lover of both horror and romance this well-written book ticked all the boxes for me.
When I was asked to review Portrait of Rage by Cynthia H. Wise, I have to admit that I was a little hesitant. There hasn’t been many reviews on Goodreads and I had never worked with this author before. But the plot sounded interesting and right up my alley, so I decided to give it a read and I’m happy to say that my only regret in picking this up was that I wasn’t able to read it closer to Halloween.
There was a lot happening in the story, from supernatural elements to missing little girls to steamy borderline erotic sex scenes (both of the supernatural and human variety) and psychic abilities. You would think that would create a chaotic overstimulated story here, but this was actually a really tight, well thought out suspenseful thriller that I read cover to cover in one sitting on a lazy Saturday. I was overconfident and thought I had it all figured out pretty early, but I was way wrong and totally enthralled in the whole reveal, I couldn’t put this down.
The characters were likeable. Tom, who is pretty much at the core of all of this, handled himself so well. He charmed the police into helping him, all evidence pointed against him but not for one second did he ever seem the least bit suspicious or concerned with the suspicion. All he wanted to do was help these little girls and keep the people he loved safe. He wore that well. The unlikely group that bands together to help him were also all interesting in their own right, with their own little supernatural secrets that added different layers to the story as well.
I also really liked the artistic standpoint, how Tom painted what he saw in dreams and all of this took place in a home he transformed into a gallery. It was a really great setting and was a very visual stimulant.
There were a lot of lingering things that make it seem like there’s far more to this story and sequels in the works and I’d actually be really interested in seeing where this story went. They jokingly allude to vampires and aliens in future situations and I’d almost like to see if Wise would take things in that direction. I really like how she handled these unbelievable experiences, explaining the unexplainable to a bunch of non believers. She’s made a believer out of me, anyway. I’m really glad I took a chance on this one, it was definitely worth it.
