We all know that alcohol consumption among the college students is rampant nowadays. But many of us are unaware that this habit begins frequently in high school. Testimony is a story about the dangers of alcohol among high school students, leading to premature sex, and other life-altering consequences. There is so much more, like the consequences of one's actions in general, but without being preachy the book forces one to think and look back at one's life, and look forward to protecting one's children.
Very, very well written by Anita Shreve.
After reading page one I became hooked! Anita Shreve managed to capture and contain my interest throughout the entire book. Contrary to another reviewer, I certainly didn't think it too steamy but rather very thought provoking. It did make you think and say to yourself... "Hmmmm, what if?"

I read this book for my Book Club and am looking forward to a very heated discussion with varying opinions about the book and the characters. I also like the fact that Anita Shreve includes a Book Club Question Section. Even if you're not in a Book Club you can participate for self introspection.

The novel did raise interesting issues and everyone will have a definite opinion but not everyone will agree with that opinion and that alone makes for good reading!

A perfect summer read!
It takes a while to begin to see the big picture here. Just small parts are revealed by each character until everything coalesces as the book draws to a close. Makes one consider how many ripples can arise from one stone thrown in the water.
I love Anita Shreve. I've read most of her books. I put off reading this book because the first chapter was too raw for me, wimp that I am. I picked up again some years later. I just couldn't finish though. It was just too sad. I could feel what was going to happen, and I couldn't stand it. I think the device of changing first person characters per chapter kept me from being judgmental about any of them. But it still hard not to blame someone for what happened after the first chapter, so I want to blame our moralist society. If the adults hadn't freaked out, would the outcome in the book have been the same? - No! (The book skips around timewise so I have an idea of outcome.) I still might finish this someday, but for now it just hits too close to home.
A few years ago, my sister informed me that she firmly believed that there was no way her two teenage boys had ever looked at porn on the internet. At that time, a parent of three young children, I was startled by her willful blindness. Now that I have teenagers, I'm all too aware of a parental desire to bury my head and not think about all the ways in which my curious adolescent children are barraged with sexual information when they don't yet have the emotional ability to handle all the ramifications of sexual relationships.

Based on incident at a eastern boarding school, Testimony is a fascinating study of the interaction between what teenagers know about sex and what they understand about themselves. Three boys in their late teens have "consensual" sex with a fourteen year old girl. The act is filmed and put on the internet. The novel explores the ways in which this single act impacts and shapes all individuals within the orbit of the central characters. Also at the center of the novel is a teenage love story which is told as a counterpoint to the graphic and disturbing sexual episode.

Each chapter is told from a viewpoint of one of the characters in the novel. The different voices were, for the most part, distinctive. The only flaw in the book for me was in the love story. There was a plot twist that ultimately I didn't believe on a couple of levels. It is for that reason that I give the book three stars.
This book was so heartbreaking I sometimes found it difficult to continue reading. But that's a comment on the realistic subject matter and presentation, not the writing. It still ended up being a page turner.

Testimony should be required reading for all adolescents of 15+, since it examines the long-range consequences of impulsive acts. We learn the ramifications for everyone who is effected by the act in questions, not just the immediate participants.

I would definitely recommend this book!
This book had the potential to be truly thought provoking, but it was a disappointment. There is a large cast of characters, and not all of them are very well fleshed out. Some , like the girl Sienna and Mike the headmaster , do not seem real. at all. The story does not make sense in many ways, I think the author had a message she wanted to express and used the novel as a vehicle for it. What was her message? Even that is not clear.
